What a day might look like at 12 months

At 12 months, most babies are on a 2-nap schedule with wake windows stretching to 3.25 - 4 hours. Here's a sample day — your child's nap timing may shift slightly as wake windows push toward the longer end of that range.

Development at 12 months

12-month milestones to watch for

Every baby develops on their own timeline, but here are the milestones most 12 month olds hit. Use it as a gentle guide, not a checklist to stress over.

🤸

Motor

  • Walks while holding onto furniture; some take first independent steps
  • Manipulates objects (bangs blocks, places items in containers)
  • Voluntarily releases objects with control
  • May attempt to put one block on top of another
🗣️

Communication

  • Says 2 - 3 words with meaning
  • Understands far more than they can say
  • Points to request objects and draw attention to things
  • Waves bye-bye, often on cue
👀

Cognitive

  • Shows strong preferences for specific people and toys
  • Identifies body parts when prompted (around 12 - 15 months)
  • Begins to understand simple instructions without gestures
  • Notices when others are hurt or upset
💛

Social & Emotional

  • Strong attachment to primary caregivers; separation anxiety may still occur
  • Attempts to play "ball" with an adult (tries to roll/throw)
  • Shows affection (hugs, pats, leaning in)
  • Expresses frustration, delight, and curiosity clearly
Heads up: If many of these milestones haven't shown up, your baby seems to have lost a skill they had, or something feels off, reach out to your healthcare provider. Trust your instincts — you know your baby best.

Feeding at 12 months

Feeding at 12 months, by the numbers

The big shift happens at 12 months: solids become the primary nutrition source and cow's milk replaces formula or expressed breast milk. About 16 oz of whole milk per day is the target.

Cow's milk transition

At 12 months, whole cow's milk (or alternative milk) can replace formula or expressed breast milk. Start with about 16 oz a day — more than 24 oz can crowd out solid food nutrition.
