Development at 7 months

7-month milestones to watch for

Every baby develops on their own timeline, but here are the milestones most 7 month olds hit. Use it as a gentle guide, not a checklist to stress over.

🤸

Motor

  • Rolls easily both ways; feet to mouth when lying on back
  • Sits straight up independently on a hard surface for one minute
  • Transfers objects from hand to hand, reaches and grasps with a raking motion, bangs toys up and down when sitting
  • Begins scooting, rocking on hands and knees, or other pre-crawling movements
🗣️

Communication

  • Babbles chains of sounds like "dah-dah-dah" and "ma-ma"
  • Responds to their own name
  • Copies some sounds and facial expressions
  • Uses different vocalizations to express emotions
👀

Cognitive

  • Developing object permanence (e.g., beginning to look for dropped items)
  • Explores objects by mouthing and shaking them
  • Recognizes familiar faces vs. strangers
  • Responds to tone of voice
💛

Social & Emotional

  • Stranger anxiety may begin to emerge
  • Shows clear preferences for familiar caregivers
  • Enjoys social games like peek-a-boo
  • Expresses joy, frustration, and curiosity through sounds and expressions
Heads up: If many of these milestones haven't shown up, your baby seems to have lost a skill they had, or something feels off, reach out to your healthcare provider. Trust your instincts — you know your baby best.

Feeding at 7 months

Feeding at 7 months, by the numbers

Breast milk or formula is still your baby's primary nutrition at 7 months. Solid meals start to become a regular part of the day, with the goal of exposure and exploration, not replacing milk feeds.

📊
4 - 6
Milk feeds per day
About 24 - 32 oz of breast milk or formula daily.
🥣
1 - 2
Solid meals per day
Offered ~30 minutes after a milk feed.
🍼
4 - 8 oz
Per bottle
Formula or expressed milk. Follow your baby's hunger cues.
🥦
Building on solids

By 7 months, most babies are exploring 1 - 2 solid meals a day. The goal is still mostly exposure — to flavors, textures, and the experience of mealtimes. Breast milk or formula continues to provide the bulk of nutrition until closer to 12 months.
